 The Policing Langur
THE POLICING LANGUR
30 / 60-minute
Monkeys have always been revered in India as an incarnation of God Hanuman.
They are worshipped, loved and fondly fed. They enjoy a niche in general Indian
psyche, culturally and emotionally.
Scene has changed somewhat, though. Monkeys have now become a major menace,
to the extent that even the highest offices in land --- Parliament, secretariat,
airports and hospitals --- are not safe from their rampaging attacks. Last
year, the deputy Mayor of national capital, Delhi, died after a monkey attack.
That perhaps sums up the whole story.
And since they are Gods, they can’t be knowingly punished or harmed.
The only solution that beleaguered officials have come up with is to deploy
a strong army of langurs, Semnopithecus, to shoo away the trouble
makers. With lean bodies, mean looks and meaner fighting equipment like sharp
teeth and a rope-like tail, langurs are now policing the main buildings under
serious threats from members of their extended clan, the monkeys.
Pinky, the
ferocious female langur is now minding the national Parliament and Raju the
main hospital in Indian capital.
An unusual and award-winning film on an unusual
subject. A film by renowned wildlife film making company, Bedi Brothers.
