 Ambi Jiji’s Retirement
The film takes viewers on a journey to the East Indian state of Meghalaya to
meet AMBI JIJI. The indigenous people of this region have traditionally practiced “JHUM” or shifting cultivation, planning crops on soil where the forest has burnt down. This Jhum field is then abandoned to re-generate and another forest burnt. Modern environmental and agricultural expert are now coming to the conclusion that this “so-called primitive form of cultivation“ is the best possible practice for mountainous regions of the world. It is good for the environment, livelihoods, biodiversity conservation and food and social security.
But AMBI JIJI and her people have known this for centuries…..Yet many of the Jhum fields are being taken over for more lucrative orchard groves.
Join film maker Nandini Bedi in her quest to find if it is the time for “AMBI JIJI’S RETIREMENT”…….
