 IIFA, International Indian Film Academy
IIFA, The International Indian Film Academy, awards have often been hailed
as the Bollywood Oscars. Reaching out to a television audience of over 470
million in five continents, it is truly the second most watched movie event
in the world.
Founded in 2000, IIFA has been travelling to different parts of the world
every year, bringing with it a riot of colours, a hallmark of Indian cinema.
Peppered with song and dance performances by major Bollywood and Hollywood
stars, the annual event recognises the achievements of artistes from Bollywood,
the second largest movie industry in the world in terms of revenues. It also
honours some top achievers from Hollywood as well. (Angelina Jolie and Sharon
Stone got the IIFA trophies in previous years.)
The event started its journey
from Millennium Dome, London and has since then been staged in South Africa,
Malaysia, Singapore, Amsterdam and Dubai. The bid to host the 2007 event was
won by a strong team from the UK, backed by the Blair government.
