1x60 Having lost their natural homes in neighbouring forests, thousands of macaques have taken over Delhi, the national capital of India, literally and physically.
Large groups of monkeys have established their ‘kingdoms’ in residential areas. Worst affected are the picturesque green areas that have Presidential palace, Prime Ministerial office and parliament. Attacking public and military guards alike, they have unleashed a reign of terror that has no easy solution in sight.
Shot over a period of two years, through four seasons, Monkey Capital documents the phenomenon vividly. In India, monkeys are considered incarnation of Lord Hanuman, and can’t be punished in any way.
Exasperated, the government has sought the help of a band of langurs, the ferocious ‘warrior’ species of monkey clan. These langurs along with their keepers now guard those high-powered buildings, even on the days when mighty army parade is held to mark the Republic Day or when foreign dignitaries are visiting the prime minister’s office!
