51 minutes Flying for Freedom tells the amazing story of how some of the best pilots, mechanics and servicemen in the United States military during World War II had to fight a battle at home to be able to fight the war abroad. As legion after legion of young men march off to a monumental war, these young patriots faced almost insurmountable odds to be able to serve their country. They trained in segregated facilities, endured harsh conditions and inferior equipment, and engaged in separate missions—only because of the darkness of their skin.
Uncovering forgotten stories and fading memories, Flying for Freedom follows the tales of these heroes from their early days as cadets in the 1940’s to their receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in March of 2007. Part history lesson and part social heritage, this moving new high-definition documentary provides a very sobering inside look at the changing face of racism during a time when black soldiers of WWII served with unquestionable dedication, only to return home to an America still unwilling to accept them as equals.
Told by the airmen themselves, these first-hand tales reveal the strength, courage and determination that it took to do what they simply loved --- fight for their country.
An Andy Streitfeld, Tom Rubeck and Monika Watkins film for AMS Pictures.
